History of the Tongrabons:

Tongrabons first came around in the 1860s during the Civil War. A man named General Robert McClellan loved the breed and raised a farm of them with his family as a little boy.  General Robert McClellan typically was the founding creator of the breed and created the first foundations stallions and mares. During the Civil War, Robert rode upon his great steed and old friend, the Tongrabon stallion, Thontoro. Together they fought in war both dying by each other's side. Many Tongrabons were used as soldier horses during the war. The breed started to become more noticed after hearing many stories about this loyal and fierce horse, especially the story of Aigalo, a grey stallion who stood by his rider's side after he was shot in battle.

After the Civil War, all remaining Tongrabons without riders were put up for auction. Being sold to numerous farmers and breeders for great amounts of money. The six remaining foundation stallions were given to General Robert McClellan's great friend, General Robert K. Pickett (a.k.a. Rob). Rob retired from the war, never to return, to continue Robert McClellan's Tongrabon dream. In 1877 he bred one of the oldest foundation stallions to a prized Thontoro descendant mare, getting a thick muscled solid chestnut colt with a gorgeous curly mane and tail, naming him Shanto. Rob loved this colt, making it his main mount and new best friend. He put all his years of training into Shanto, making him truly a prized and wanted stallion. Shanto was very different though, he had a unique personality that was very different from his parents and ancestors. Shanto only responded to Rob and no one else, he would even try to bite at other people walking by but yet slept by the side of his owner. Cause of that no one wanted to breed their mares to him, thinking that the foals would get his despised personality. Shanto had only been bred 3 times, two of the times producing twins which was very rare. In 1907, exactly 30 years later, Shanto passed away, having left behind 5 foals with fantastic linage.

(A team of Tongrabons pulling a tram in the cities of 1900.)
In the 1900s you saw many Tongrabons being used at work horses in the cities, pulling carriages and carts. Once again the breed had become just a regular farm horses with no meaning and Rob wanted to change that. He began training them to be suitable for racing. The breed didn't develop well to racing like the Thoroughbreds, but their recorded speed was an average of 40 mph. In 1934 Rob put his training to the test, getting into the racing business with a famous horse racer. The first ever Tongrabon to race was a gelding named Checker. He ran in the first race at the Narragansett Race Track in 1934, racing against the mighty Thoroughbreds. Everyone kept an eye on Checker to see how mighty and grand he was, to see if a Tongrabon could beat champion racers. Checkers ended up placing an unfair 2nd. He could've placed 1st, but didn't due to a cheating cocky jockey and his stubborn horse. Even though Robs Tongrabon didn't win, he continued to race them at other race tracks, Checker's even placed 1st his second time racing. By 1950 Checkers retired, having won more than half of his races. His half-brother Cheer Plain also raced, winning all of his competitions and siring over 50 foals, 38 of them being Thoroughbred crosses, which came to be known as Tongrabon warmbloods.

In the 1960s they became very popular in all sports; they even began to compete in western sports like barrel racing. After Rob passed away in 1962, his house and Tongrabon farm was sold to a rich man and his family. They had been in the racing and breeding business for years and knew he could make big bucks with this new breed. Many of the Tongrabons were imported all over America and other countries, having been "tested" to see if it was really that great of a breed. The rich man, Matthew Calvert registered the Tongrabons, making them a real breed of horse having their foundation home be the Tongrabon farm, which is now called High Rook Stables. They did do some customization, like building a mansion home and new barns and pastures for the horses. Matthew even had a trail built in a forest not too far away.
In the 2000s, High Rook Tongrabon imports came about,  60+ and counting are finding new homes.
